Service List

Coal pillars have to satisfy two criteria simultaneously: they must be strong enough to provide the necessary protection and they must be as small as possible to optimize reserve utilization. We are leaders in the field of pillar design.

Pillar Design

Falls of roof are still the single biggest  cause of injury and fatalities in coal mines. Different types of roof require different approaches to support design. We developed different support design methods for different situations.

Roof Support Design

We developed methods to predict surface subsidence and the related elements of induced tilt and ground strain.as a result of high extraction mining methods.  Our fundamental prediction method is unique to South Africa but can be adapted easily to any situation.

Subsidence Prediction      

As time goes by, various undesired effects of mining, especially mining that was done in the days before sophisticated design methods were available, can manifest themselves. We have experience of handling these effects in South Africa and in France.

Long Term Surface Stability

The strength of a pillar begins to deteriorate the moment it has been created. We created  the world’s first successful method to predict for how long pillars can be expected to be stable.

Long Term Pillar Stability

This is a much more common phenomenon than one would expect. In areas where high extraction mining (or even oil extraction) was practiced, the cracks surrounding the subsided area re-open after several years or even decades, resulting in pot holes of different dimensions.

Sub Surface Erosion

We developed a method of sizing pillars for secondary extraction making use of the concept of crush pillars. The crush pillars are stable during mining in their immediate vicinity, protecting crews, but fail soon after, preventing undesirable stress build-up.

Pillar Extraction Lay-out

Longwalling can be described as the prince of coal mining methods, characterized by high rates of production and high productivity. However, It is crucial for the face length to suit local geological conditions and for the chain pillars to be designed correctly. We use proven and sophisticated numerical methods to optimize the design.
